Gallstones Update 4. Surgery Done

Hi everyone.

It has been a while since I have done a gallstones update as nothing has been happening and I have been sitting on the waiting list hoping I would get my operation date through as soon as possible.

Well I finally received a call 2 weeks ago asking if I could go in for my operation on 8th November. I jumped at the chance and was booked in for my pre op one week before I was due for my operation.

So my operation took place last week. I had a laprascopic cholecystectomy and this was done under the day surgery ward.

I arrived on the ward at 7:30am and was admitted, asked to put on a gown and paper knickers and sit in a recline chair to wait to be called for surgery.

I was called for surgery at 9:20am so I didn’t have to wait for too long, which is good as I wasn’t allowed my phone. Luckily I had taken a book to read! The consultant and the anesthesiologist came to see me before I went down to sign consent forms etc.

I was back up on the reclining chair by 11:30am and all was done. The nurse said I would need to stay for 6 hours so this is what happened. I was in quite a bit of discomfort which was apparently due to the gas still in my body from surgery, I am still suffering from this now but it gets better every day. This was something I wasn’t told about before hand and I wish I had have been because it is really quite painful and the pain goes up into your shoulders so it can be a quite frightening pain if you are not expecting it.

After having a horrible tuna sandwich and a few cups of tea the consultant who performed the surgery came to see how I was getting on and then at 5pm I was able to be discharged. I was given dressings which I have been replacing every 48 hours and also told to make an appointment to have the clips taken out at my GP’s on Friday, which I have done.

Since then I have been getting better everyday I am still sitting up when.i go to sleep using lots of pillows to prop myself up with but I am getting lower down the more nights go by which is fab 🙂 I can’t sleep on my side yet though which I’m missing as that is how I usually sleep.

I have 4 wounds from the surgery. 3 or which are fine and healing well but one is starting to go red and a little bit sore so I am not sure if this is getting infected! I shall be keeping a close eye on it!!!

This is a picture of how my wounds where looking 4 days after surgery.

Laughing and coughing are so painful which is not fun and for the first 4 days I was walking hunched right over but I am standing up straighter every day.

I will do another update next week when I have had my clips out and let you all know how I am getting on.

I am just so glad that nasty gallbladder has now gone!

Thank you for reading and watching if you did.

Gallstones Update Three

Hi everyone,

So yesterday I went into hospital at 8am in the morning. I was taken for my ERCP at around 10am in the xray department.

I was given Buscopan, pain killer and sedation via an IV and they got going straight away. From what I had read and been told I thought I would be drowsy and not really feel things etc but no I guess the sedation didn’t work on me as I felt and remember everything.

Luckily I had had the camera before so I knew what that felt like but I didn’t enjoy the feeling of the ferating about in my bile duct area to be honest!!

After having this done it turned out no stones where found in my bile duct so I’m assuming I passed them or they moved back out? I am not to sure how this all works.

I went back to the ward and had to be nil by mouth for 4 hours after the procedure
Around 2 hours after I started to develop pain in the middle of my abdomen just under my ribs, this I assume was because they had been in there and aggravated everything but I wasn’t feeling too good for around an hour. They took my obs and everything was OK that side and they gave me some IV paracetamol which took the pain away thank goodness!

I then had a sandwich and a drink which all seemed to go down fine and I was then allowed to go home at around 5:30pm. When I got home I just had a small sandwich and a cup of tea and went to bed around 10:30pm.

At around 1:30am I woke up with the same pain so had to come downstairs and take more pain killers ans I sat down there for a good hour until the pain subsided and then I went back to bed.

Today I have been feeling pain on and off. I called my GP and he didn’t seem concerned about the pain and prescribed me some stronger pain killers and also some Buscopan which really helped when I was just out of hospital from having pancreatisis.

I now have to wait for another outpatients appointment to come through and then I should hopefully be put on the waiting list for having my gallbladder removed.

I am still in a little bit of pain but am hoping I get a better nights sleep tonight.

Thank you for reading, I’m sure I’ll be back with another update soon.

Gallstones Update Two

Hi everyone,

It has been a few weeks since I updates you on my gallstones and what is going on so I thought I would update you now I have been for my appointment.

I had my appointment just over 2 weeks ago I was told to go to the fast track waiting area which frightened me a little as I was not aware I needed to be fast tracked and was worries about the results on my MRI scan. I was told that on my MRI scan they found a stone stuck in my bile duct and that this would have to be removed before I had my gallbladder removed. The consultant explained that I would have to have a procedure called an ERCP which involves a tube being put down my throat, my bile duct cut open and the stone removed and I will have to be sedated for this. He then filled in a form and ticked the urgent box! When I passed the form onto the sister she told me this should be done within 2 weeks of my appointment.

Well I left it 2 weeks and had not heard anything so I rang yesterday and I’m pretty sure I had been missed I was told after being passed around a little that I was at the top of the list so I would receive an appoitment soon.

Then around an hour after my phone call what do you know the endoscopy unit called with an appointment for me! My appointment is for next week and I have to arrive at 8am in the morning and will also have to stay overnight so they can keep an eye on me after my procedure. I also have to be nil by mouth from 12am the night before.

I am a little worried about this, mainly because I have to go by myself as hubby will have to do school run etc and also because I have to stay in overnight so I will be worrying about everyone at home and hoping they are all OK but I know it is important that I get myself sorted so I am well to look after everyone else 😀.

So that’s where I am at the moment, I will update you once I have had this procedure done and let you know how it goes!

Thank you for reading and wish me luck
